Sega Considering Downloadable Saturn Games

by Phil Kollar on Jun 30, 2010 at 12:00 PM

We already know about Sega's plan to bring Dreamcast games to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network soon. But what about Sega's previous, lesser-known and less-beloved console, the Saturn? According to a recent interview, Saturn games may also be in line for digital re-release in the future.

Andriasang has the translated quotes via an interview at Impress Watch. The Japanese site talked to Sega producer Yosuke Okunari, who was quick to say, "It's not that we're ignoring Saturn," when asked about the possibility of XBLA or PSN downloadable Saturn ports.

He continued, "What we announced this time is a project where we will have consecutive releases of titles that were debuted on Dreamcast. Separate from this, we're of course thinking about ports of Saturn games... It's not that we have no intention of porting Saturn titles, so please share your requests."

Asked why they skipped from Genesis titles as downloadable right up to Dreamcast, Okunari explained, "When you look globally, the Genesis and Dreamcast are well known, but Saturn is unknown. During that period, PlayStation and Nintendo 64 were a success overseas, but to be honest Saturn was not a success. Because of this, we decided on Dreamcast."

As psyched as I am for some of the upcoming Dreamcast XBLA/PSN releases, there are a lot of Saturn games I totally missed out on that I'd love a chance to finally play. Case in point: the supposedly amazing but incredibly rare Panzer Dragoon Saga (pictured above). Make it happen, Sega.
