Codemasters Reveals ‘Shreddable’ FPS Bodycount

by Jeff Cork on Mar 09, 2010 at 05:00 AM

Codemasters is stepping back into the FPS fray with a new IP, Bodycount. The game is being designed by Stuart Black, co-creator and designer of Black, and promises a new level of destructible environments. Actually, “destructible” doesn’t even describe the amount of structural chaos players will generate in Bodycount, according to its makers.

“We’re all massive FPS fans,” says Black, Creative Director on Bodycount “and believe that there’s room for a refresh of the shooter experience. If Race Driver: GRID was all about the purity of racing, then everything in Bodycount is absolutely centered on the bullet and its impact on the world. Our shredding tech enables us to create a different kind of gameplay, where players and AI can’t hide behind indestructible cover and rely on whack-a-mole mechanics. Here the environment is constantly changing as the game world is shot to hell; it’s going to be a huge amount of fun.”

“From the jaw-dropping devastation caused by firing into enemies or shredding the world around you in a hail of bullets, Bodycount will crystallize that moment of pulling the trigger into an exhilarating sensory overload of action,” adds Executive Producer Tom Gillo.

The game is being designed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 using the company’s proprietary EGO Engine, and is currently slated for a first quarter release in 2011. Let’s hope it ultimately fares better than Codemasters’ last FPS effort, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. It certainly seems to at least have enough shredding for everyone.
