Any lingering Phantasy Star Online fans should be heartened by the news that the MMO's alpha is starting in August in Japan, but it doesn't look like the game is any closer to coming out here.

Japanese site 4gamer.net has coverage of an event in Japan for the game at which Sega announced that the closed alpha is coming in August. The publisher also talked a little bit about the game's three character classes. Hunters are close-combat melee fighters, Rangers are mid-ranged experts, and Force characters deal damage via long-range magic attacks. PSO 2 accommodates 12-player multiplayer with parties of four characters each. PSO 2 is touting something called Hybrid Custom Action, but we don't know a lot about that yet – other than what it sounds like it entails.

We expect to hear more about the game at Tokyo Game Show in September. Until then, check out the teaser trailer from last year's TGS.
