Namco Bandai showed off a trailer for a new game called Knight’s Contract at E3. The trailer revealed very little about the game, but at Gamescom 2010 in Germany Namco took the veil off the game.

Knight’s Contract is a hack and slasher starring Heinrich, an “invincible executioner,” and Gretchen, a resurrected witch. The gimmick is Heinrich can’t be killed. He’s built like a tank and wields a powerful scythe weapon. Gretchen can cast a variety of powerful magic spells, but she’s relatively frail. If she dies, it’s game over.

That mechanic requires the player to ensure that she’s safely away from harm as she provides support. Heinrich can pick her up and carry her to safety, where she’s free to blast foes with icy daggers or knock them from below with thorny vines.

The game is set in medieval Europe, and stars Dr. Faust and his homunculus army. The enemies are clumsy but lethal, looking as though they were cobbled together from spare human parts. We also got a chance to see a couple of boss encounters, including one with a fiery chariot pulled by a two-headed stallion, and a three-legged salamander-like monstrosity.

The game is still quite early, but it should be hitting the PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2011.
