Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

A New Hero Rounds Out Birth By Sleep Roster

Our hands-on time with Birth by Sleep at TGS was very limited, but what we saw was enough to get us excited.

Immediately upon starting the demo we were introduced to a new enemy type, which appeared to be a combination of the Heartless and Nobodies from Kingdom Hearts I & II. We took on the new creatures with an unfamiliar male protagonist named Terra. Ventus (who looks nearly identical to Roxas from KHII) and a female protagonist named Aqua join Terra and top off the playable characters at three. As far as story continuity, Birth by Sleep is the earliest chapter in the Kingdom Hearts saga, which should also explain the familiar looking antagonist. The three youths are keyblade apprentices in search of the missing keyblade master, Master Xehanort.

The antagonist is the same menacing figure found in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix. If unfamiliar with the ending, you can watch it here. As a refresher, the teaser features three fully armored youths approaching the antagonist, who splits into a second equally armored character. From there, the heroes battle it out against the highly powerful pair amongst a field of ancient keyblades. The situation seems desperate, as the foes are able to command earth and magic at their will.

But back to Birth by Sleep. Combat, although not entirely aware of what we were selecting in the Japanese build, felt much more fluid and diverse. We pulled off a slew of unique attacks on the ground, in the air and while dashing across the screen, all of which worked gracefully on the PSP. All and all, we left the brief demo feeling that Birth by Sleep is on par with the numbered installments in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, as opposed to the spin-offs on the GBA and DS that feel a bit disconnected. Similar to Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, Birth by Sleep will let players customize a “deck” of techniques and abilities, and a dice mini-game is somehow incorporated in the mix—although not a part of the basic battle system.

After putting the PSP down we watched a short trailer that revealed several other details, including appearances by Snow White and Stitch. The later appears to have his own unique space-themed level. Cinderella and the other Princesses of Heart also popped in.

Multiplayer mode was introduced at TGS, but no meaty details were given. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is set to release January 2010 in Japan, but isn’t yet confirmed for the states. We don’t expect that to last too long.

  • Looks cool. Can't wait for a ps3 installment!

  • Finally. It's about time we hear some news about this game from GameInformer! I can't wait for more info!! :D

  • Tetsuya Nomura has had a lot on his plate recently, so it'll be nice to see one of his titles being released somewhat soon. This and Versus XIII are looking to be absolutely amazing, although it is hard to talk about gameplay at this point. On that note, I was very excited to here that the combat "felt much more fluid and diverse," and multiplayer is just icing on the cake. It's just about time to dust off the PSP...

  • Wow this really looks cool!

  • This game looks great, but its taking forever!

  • Looks awesome, of course... But the main and most important question is HOW MUCH LONGER ARE WE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT?!

  • I'm glad a new PLAYSTATION KH game is finally coming!  I'm tired of the nintendo versions they both sucked and the graphics were bad.  The screenshots look amazing.  I can't tell the difference between this and the PS2 games!  Hopefully we only will have to wait a few more months.

  • Im buying a psp just for this game!!

  • ive been looking for the story on this!! and im SUPER glad to see a release date on the summary page. i cant wait for it!!!

  • so cool!!!

  • you fight the cat from Cinderella? that's awesome. must be some kind of tie in where you are shrunk down to the size of the house mice. that would be interesting, i just hope there isn't a singalong for "cinderelly" like KH2 had for the little mermaid. >.>

  • this looks epic...im addicted to the game

  • OMG!! I can't wait XD

  • This better be better than the pathetic DS game. That thing was TERRIBLE!

  • To Answer a lot of questions, the exact Japanese release date is January 9, 2010 (that will be sold with a limited edition PSP(Japan only >.<)) it will most likely take about 4 months for the translations so that's about April/Mayish and 1 more month for making copies so we're looking at a May/June release for the U.S

All Information is from KHInsider :D

  • cccccccccccooooooooooooooooooooooooolllllllllllll

  • OMGosh I can not wait. I am so glad to finally get some solid info on this title. I wonder what the connection is between Venta and Roxas. There has to be something there because they are almost exactly alike in appearance. If there is a connection then there is most definitely a connection to Sora. I also wonder what Final Fantasy Characters will make an appearance. Maybe Cecil or Kain, that would be so cool. Oh the possibilities are endless.

  • Aw man! Now I want to go out and buy a PSP just so I can play this game!

  • "but what we saw was enough to get us excited. " VERY EXCITED INDEED!!!!

  • I can't wait for it to come out! It's gonna be AAAAAAAAAAWWWWWEESSSSSSSSSSOOOOME!!!!!!!!!!
