  • As much as I love video games, I've always been a huge fan of unique and different board games.  I loved playing Axis and Allies with my friends in high school, and recently I've gotten sucked into Pandemic.  I'm not talking about Monopoly or Sorry, I'm talking about the games like Risk, Settlers of Catan, and Ticket to Ride, games that have deep strategic depth and addictive gameplay.

In fact, the more that I play some of these better board games, the more I'm convinced that a lot of the mechanics that make games like Brutal Legend and Civilization IV amazing can be traced back to some remarkable work with tabletop gaming.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has some positive gaming experiences from the analog variety of gaming.

  • D&D. Its like just chillin' in your basement with friends. Only you are a half elf rogue on an epic quest with your party doing epic things.

  • I love me some Risk. Taking over the world, one turn at a time.

What is up with Australia always being taken over though? Sure, its a defensive strong point, but must every game I play devolve to people fighting over it?

Just so you know, there is a group called Tabletop here to talk about board games and the like.

  • Mr.Smashter, Australia is the key to the game. There is only one point of entry so it's real easy to defend. And there are only a few regions so it is easy to maintain control over the continent.

Also, join our tabletop group. The more the merrier.

  • Settlers of Catan is an awesome game!

I get that. I exploit it myself when I get the chance. I just hate how that is always how the matches end; fighting over Australia.

Personally, I take Greenland most of the time. I find it to be an excellent spot to spread out from. And if I can get it, South America is another personal favorite.

Does anyone know of an online Risk game that is free and preferably even multiplayer? I would love to download one.
