When a gamer plays his old retro games again, he enjoys it. Right? WRONG!
I was able to beat Halo 3 in a few days, (or hours) including Cod4. They have complex controls, and some unique things. In retro games, they have simple controls, and the objectives are simple, so retro games are easy. Right? WRONG!
I can beat Gears of War, Halo 3, Cod 4, Portal, and Banjo & Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. But I can't beat Super Mario World, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, or anything else? WTF! WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME? Those games are so simple, but why am I having such a hard time beating them?
Mario just has to jump on his enemies, but I can't do that! WHY!
ARGH! Have any of you had this problem?
Now I think I understand. Games back then are supposed to get harder as you play them. Games nowadays just don't do that anymore. The final levels of those games just don't get any harder and they stay the same. Games today are more about excitement then difficulty.
Another reason is because your options are limited. Sure, in Super Mario World, you can just fly through all the levels but that's just no fun. If all you do in that game is jump and throw things, the game is going to make it harder for you. But most of todays games are all about realism, like if there's no difficulty at all. The last hard game I played was Call of Duty for Xbox. Levels get harder in that game, right?
it's not that they are simple. it's that they have fewer options. you don't get to pick what combo you want to defeat bowser with dude. you run and jump and dodge everything he throws at you until you see an opportunity to jump on him. then you repeat until you have beat him. and you go back even after you've lost all of your lives. because that's what a true gamer does. and yes i have beat super mario world several times :P
You know, I have had that kind of problem. The games which are so complex are often not as difficult for me as the games which are, seemingly, less complex. I think it just goes to show how deceptively difficult so many classic titles really were back in the day.
games just ant as hard as they used to be. nowadays its more about oging along for the ride, its a cinimatic experience. back in the old days games wernt really cinimatic at lal, they were just challenges and puzzles.
DON'T WORRY
I strongly believe that saving is the key difference. When something is hard nowadays we don't even notice because we can play it a few times again and figure it out. In retro games you played until something killed you. Playing two hours to die at the same spot makes it hard to switch up strategy and get better when its another two hours before you get there again...and that's if you get there again.
Super Mario World is easy, now Super Mario Bros. 3.... That suckas hard!
The beauty of my muscles will warm your heart.
Yeah, SMW is a cake walk since you can just fly straight over a lot of the levels SMB3 requires a little bit of work.

If you haven't already done so, look at the Forum Rules thread and Zmagnum's Unspoken Rules of the Community blog post.
Actualy super Mario brothers 3 is a cake walk if you use the flutes.
Sorry guy's. They're all easy for me. (except for those floating log level's) Lol.
Kill'em with kindness. It's a slow, painful death.
I thought that SMB3 was easy and SMW was hard as hell. Huh, different strokes for different folks, I suppose :-P
Of course, that's what I said last time, isn't it?
the super mario 2 is my downfall, super mario 3 and super mario world were easy even as a kid, donkey kong country 3 is a pain in the ass at times. I love side scrollers they take me back to a simpler time
ITT: Gamer finally realizes that games nowadays are balls easy compared to the SNES era and before.
And how in the world can you not beat Super Mario World?
Yeah SMB2 (aka Doki Doki Panic) was pretty challenging, but still plenty of fun.
Big Mouth from SMB3 is literally the reason why my mom stopped playing video games. I *** you not.
complexity does not equal difficulty
I find that games have gotten increasingly easier over the years. I remember there were games I couldn't beat way back when. Maybe some of this is with age, but I remember there were some real tough games. Of course I haven't tested the age theory because I haven't really gone back to play any so....
And I disagree to the poster above me. Complexity will usually equal a higher level of difficulty.
I do declare.
