Nintendo President of America Issues an Ultimatum to Infinity Ward

There are many blockbuster games are going to come out this holdiay season. Two of them happen to be Modern Warfare 2 and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

In a recent interview where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime stated that the new Zelda is not committed to a release date in 2010, he also issued an ultimatum to Infinity Ward. He predicts that this holiday season, New Super Mario Bros Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2.

He did issue one caveat: he is only looking at sales of Modern Warfare on the Xbox 360, not acombined sales total over its multiplatform release. "Absolutely. I say that unequivocally," said Reggie. "Let's take it all the way through the January NPD data -- yes. I'll put that stake in the ground."

A bold claim to make against a game that has pushed multiple games into 2010, but this is Mario we're talking about. Mario games have consistently been Nintendo's highest selling series.

What do you think?

  • I don't even know why this would matter.  Why would Nintendo want to take on Infinity Ward and why do they think comparing sales of Mario to sales of Modern Warfare 2 is a normal idea?  Who at nintendo thought that this should be part of what they do?  Is it a bet now?  Is IW going to wash Nintendos undies for a week if they lose?  This is an awkward occurance to say the least.

  • Haha.. Nope.

  • No way. Mario is a fun, highly successful and recognizable series, but I still think Modern Warfare will be selling more, even if it's just on xbox. Maybe Mario will come close around Christmas time, but overall I don't think so.

  • I doubt it. Modern Warfare 2 has had too much hype surrounding it to be beat by Mario.

Sorry Reggie but you lost the bet.

  • I think we're looking at a generation-gap challenge.  Older generations of console gamers who grew up with the NES and Mario will obviously root for said videogame, while the newer generation of gamers caught up on hype are going to be buying the FPS shooter.

Me?  I'll be getting both.  I'm the real winner here. :)

  • I agree with you, Matt. Mario is a more recognizable brand and franchise, whereas Modern Warfare 2 is catering to a "new school" of gamers. I'm planning on purchasing both as well. Frankly, however, Reggie's attitude grates on the nerves. It's quite smug of him to assume that any Nintendo game will simply outsell another (though I know it is entirely possible -- look at the success of Wii Fit!) I've never been a fan of him.

  • I think both games will sell well, but Reggie's unbacked confidence makes me uneasy.

  • Its a Mario game. And its on the Wii. It will sell. New Super Mario Bros. DS has been in the NPD top 20 since it released.

  • Wii's outsell 360's by a huge margin, and considering this is the holiday season, it is possible.

Although I think it is possible, it would still surprise me, Modern Warfare 2 is going to be one beast of a game.

  • It's a possibility, by March of last year Galaxy had sold 8 mill worldwide while COD4 sold 7 mill by January worldwide. The two month difference could mean something but the numbers for COD was for all consoles.

However, with the massive hype that MW2 has received the sales will probably be one of the highest numbers yet. I'd say Nintendo has a 30-25% chance at most.

  • They'll crunch some numbers behind the scenes, and still be arguing about the 'official' outcome next holiday season..

  • I think what is happening here is much more than a simple 'dare'. I think Nintendo knows that MMO FPS games are anything BUT timeless, and that the unscrupulous use of graphic violence and pejorative advertising won't have the impact on sales that IW believes. Frankly, I agree - If I have to be lured in to buying a game based on marketing gimmicks then there's a pretty good chance that the game will not be as good as I'm told. At first, people will rave about MW2...and in a couple of months, unless IW puts a DLC out by Christmas.. Nintendo won't fall down on that claim.

Another thing to think about is that by the time Christmas rolls around MW2 will have sold a majority of what it's going to at release. If Nintendo only looks at December sales then its kind of a no brainer...
