I'm a bit of a 360 fanboy. What can I say? I've been spoiled by the fantastic gameplay and multiplayer of Microsoft games for quite some time, thanks to the amazing Xbox LIVE service provided, even though I have to pay (argh). I am a big techie when it comes to the video game trends. But sometimes, the newest craze is not always the cure. You just have to go back to your roots every once in a while. Every year, I like to host a little gaming session with my friends every winter (we've done it for 4 years now) where everyday instead of playing the worldwide famous titles like Call of Duty and Gears of War and Assassin's Creed and Halo 3 and Uncharted 2, we choose to unwind with what we call the Classic Challenge.
Cheesy? Yes. Pointless? Kinda. Fun? F*** yeah! It's a simple challenge; only play last-gen games and every week, host a small tournament of some game famous for split-screen or multiplayer. Whoever wins the most and plays the most wins... well, nothing, but the fact that we play to have the good times again is fun itself. The reason why I'm blogging this is so others like you may want to try it, and if you don't, then that's fine. If you really want to be a part of this dumb but entertaining challenge, just try it with friends or maybe even an afterschool event. Speaking of which, I host an afterschool video game club at my high school and we do this every year. We pull out the plugs of our dust-collecting Gamecubes, PSones, N64's, PS2's, Dreamcasts, Genesis's, and even a Sega Saturn (very rare) for an annual moment of fame. We include any game as long as it supports some sort of split-screen, but if you're playing just for the nostalgic remembrance, I understand. From Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 to Army games to Crazy Taxi to Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2: Battle, we have plenty of fun.
In fact, I checked my old consoles if they worked and I got my old PSone slim to work, which is odd because it didn't and it gathered dust ever since.
Broken PSone +dust+5 years=????!Profit!
As I said before, we hold a tournament each week for some game famous for split-screen or multiplayer. For example, we've played Robo-Pit one week, and we're planning to play the first Burnout crash mode and whoever gets the highest amount of damage wins. We enjoy playing, but we all make sure we try our best to win. Luckily, I've been top dog because every last week, we have a tournament with everyone in the club for Super Smash Bros. Melee and I've always come out on top (Young Link and Fox all the way). I hope that title stays with me before I leave to college.
Well, that's enough about the Classic Challenge. I hope you might see the importance of those old games you've probably scrapped or gotten rid of. If you choose to live in the now, that's fine, but some of the best games are in the past.
Sounds like a blast
Might have to give this a try
wow i HAVE to try that!
Guha?!? Nice blog. Next one you guys should go with whomever gets the highest score in Pac-Man or Asteroids.
Ahh, Thanksgiving break. It was fun while it lasted, and I had fun with family and friends, but even
I remember playing Jedi Knight dark forces 2 when I was 5 on the pc. That was an awesome game. And I still play quake 2, maybe you should check those games out. @Ben awesome hero image. Zero and the black knights ftw!
