EA And DICE Staging Intercontinental Battlefield 4 Competition

by Jeff Marchiafava on Oct 04, 2013 at 12:26 PM

Electronic Arts has announced an international competition that will pit USA against Europe in Battlefield 4.

Battlefield 4: Showdown Live Europe vs. USA will take place in London on November 1 at 10:00AM PDT, and will be live-streamed via Xbox Live. It will also be the first time fans can check out the first Battlefield 4 expansion pack, Second Assault, which features four Battlefield 3 maps.

Major Nelson will head up America's 32-player team, while Xbox social marketing manager Graeme Boyd (A.K.A. AceyBongos) will be leading the European team. Both teams will be comprised of "Top-tier Battlefield players," though EA has not outlined how these players will be chosen. However, one lucky player can win a seat on the US team (along with a free trip to London) by competing in this weekend's Battlefield 4 Play and Win contest, which you can find out more about here.

Second Assault is one of five expansion packs included in the Battlefield 4 Premium membership. Battlefield is set to launch on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 29, PlayStation 4 on November 12, and Xbox One on November 22. If you can't wait that long, you can check out the Battlefield 4 beta, which launched today; see a video of it in action here.

Our Take
I can't say I'm particularly interested in seeing which team comes out on top, but as a Battlefield fan, I would like to see more of the game in action and get an early look at the first DLC. It's also interesting that EA has a new favorite platform; after releasing Battlefield 3's DLC packs on PS3 first, the company is now giving Xbox One fans first crack at Second Assault, and is holding its competition exclusively on Microsoft hardware. Love is a fickle thing.
