EA Gets Rough With Tiger

by Matthew Kato on Dec 02, 2010 at 03:06 AM

In sports, all that matters is winning, and when you're winning, the world is your oyster. And when you're not... EA has thrown down the gauntlet on Tiger Woods and his cover boy/ franchise affiliation with the Tiger Woods golf series: Win or else.

Back when Tiger's sex scandal broke (and continued to develop), EA's Peter Moore was very clear in his commitment to Tiger and the golfer's affiliation with EA Sports. Now EA CEO John Riccitiello has added a caveat to their business relationship.

"We're with him because he has the promise of being the world's best golfer," explained Riccitiello. "We have no plans to move away from him, but it's a business relationship on the basis of we make the best golf game and he's the best golfer. Both of those things need to be true in the long run for the partnership to make sense."

"[Woods] sort of stuck with us for a very long time and we made great business together," continued Riccitiello, "and we're willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a period of time."

Woods is currently ranked second in the world – breaking a 281-week reign atop the charts – and is 42nd in the FedExCup playoff standings.
