Epic Says iPhone Could Run Gears of War In Future

by Matt Helgeson on Nov 03, 2010 at 06:12 AM

In an interview with Eurogamer, Chair Entertainment creative director and Shadow Complex creator Donald Mustard speculates that the iPhone -- which will run Chair parent company Epic's Unreal Engine for the upcoming Infinity Blade -- could be capable of running Gears of War.

Mustard said, "I didn't take [iPhone] that seriously until we started making this game. Now I'm like, 'Oh my goodness, this is literally going to be the best looking handheld game ever made'. It's way beyond what a DS or PSP could do... I think it's going to be an interesting future, especially if in two years we can really run Gears of War on an iPhone."

While this is not a confirmation that Gears is in development for iPhone, it does point to the fact that hardcore, graphically intensive games are on the way for mobile platforms -- sooner rather than later.
"That's one of the reasons why Epic are so interested in getting their engine onto these devices. Projecting out three or four years into the future, if the current trends stay true, these devices are going to be just as powerful as the Xbox 360. We'll have a truly powerful console just sitting in all of our pockets," said Mustard.
