Black Box Developing Next Need For Speed Title

by Matt Bertz on Nov 02, 2010 at 07:05 AM

With Need for Speed Hot Pursuit all wrapped up in time for its November 16 release date, EA revealed the next game from the series is moving back to its former studio. Senior vice president Patrick Soderlund told Eurogamer that we can "safely assume" that the next Need for Speed title is coming from Black Box.

As for what project Criterion will take on next, Soderlund was evasive, saying "What happens to Criterion in the future, we'll see. Obviously they're a brilliant studio we're going to put against something that makes sense for EA and them. We're not ready to talk about exactly what that is at this point." His next comment made it seem like they could possibly be picking up another Need for Speed project slated to release after the Black Box game: "My vision for NFS is it will be a brand the consumer can enjoy on an annual basis, and he can look at that game and say, 'I know this is going to be a high quality entertainment experience.' That is a must for us."

So what about Burnout? While Soderlund wouldn't commit outright to a new Burnout title, he did say "I hope to see more Burnout games in the future. But it's about prioritizing what we want to do. At this point we haven't made a decision to whether Burnout does this or that, but it's not dead for sure, no."
