Sony Starts Up PlayStation Rewards Program

by Matthew Kato on Oct 27, 2010 at 06:22 AM

First there were trophies. Then PlayStation Plus. and Now PlayStation Rewards. Sony is starting a new, three-tier loyalty rewards program next spring, and the first grand prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.

When the program starts, registered PlayStation Network users will be able to join for free and start making their way up the three status ranks (Select, Pro, and Legendary) for actions with their PS3 and PSP like playing new games, buying stuff in the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Home, downloading movies, taking surveys, etc. Your progress will be charted on your user profile page via meter which shows how far you have until the next level.

Users will get exclusive rewards such as PSN avatars, PlayStation Home content, themes, and the chance to participate in members-only contests and giveaways. The first such sweepstakes is for an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As the show is in January, it appears that this first contest will only be open to the program's beta users. Sony says that the invitation-only beta begins tomorrow, and it consists of select members, including those in the Gamer Advisory Panel and some early adopters of PlayStation Plus.

We'll have more details on the PlayStation Rewards program as the spring public launch approaches.
