Champions Online Goes Free To Play

by Matthew Kato on Oct 26, 2010 at 04:16 AM

Little over a month ago developer Cryptic Studios made MMO Champions Online free to play for a week to celebrate the game's one-year anniversary. Now it's going to be free permanently.

Starting in some unspecified time in the first quarter of next year (with a beta for the new model starting on November 9), Champions Online will adopt the freemium MMO model where you can play for free, but some premium features will cost you. The upcoming free version of Champions Online will not have any time limits or level caps, and there will likely be free premium content for current paid subscribers.

"Transitioning Champions Online to the free-to-play model is a great opportunity to reach a whole new audience of PC gamers that view subscription fees as a barrier to entry," explained Cryptic CEO John Needham. "By taking care of our current subscription-based community and welcoming the addition of new players through free-to-play, Champions Online is poised to build upon its success and to establish a new leadership position as the first free-to-play superhero MMO."
