Steam Reaches 30 Million Accounts

by Phil Kollar on Oct 18, 2010 at 02:25 PM

Back when Valve's digital distribution service, Steam, popped into existence in 2003, I couldn't imagine using it. Jump ahead six years, and Steam is the primary choice for many gamers, myself included, to do their PC gaming. Valve showed just how popular they are today by announcing that they've hit the 30 million mark for number of Steam accounts.

Valve revealed some further stats to go with this impressive accomplishment. For example, in the last year new user growth on Steam has climbed by 178% and sales have increased by more than 200%. The service now has over 1200 games available, over 200 of which use advanced Steamworks functionality such as Achievements and multiplayer through Steam. Over six million users log onto Steam every day, with an all-time peak of over three million users at once.

Valve president Gabe Newell said Steam is "on track to record the biggest year in its six-year history." Congratulations to Valve for the accomplishment!
