Epic: Unreal Engine Too Powerful For 3DS

by Tim Turi on Oct 06, 2010 at 12:36 PM

Everyone who has seen the 3DS in action can confirm that the graphical potential of the system is very powerful. How powerful? Pretty powerful, but it’s probably not strong enough to handle Epic’s Unreal Engine, according to the company’s vice president.

"No," Rein replied after being asked if Epic is working on 3DS software during a GDC Online interview. "It's below our [minimum specifications], from what we can tell. We don't have a 3DS, so there's no way for us to verify that," he added, "but everything we've been led to believe is that it's below our min-spec. You couldn't do a game that looks like [Epic Citadel] on it, for example."

This means that Epic will not be developing games for the 3DS, nor will they be providing a 3DS-engineered Unreal Engine for developers. He clarified that he doesn’t know enough about the 3DS to make a formal statement, and that if Nintendo thought it was feasible they would have approached Epic already.

Sorry kids, no Bulletstorm 3DS just yet.
