Will The Next Tomb Raider Be An Open-World Origin Story?

by Phil Kollar on Sep 21, 2010 at 03:00 PM

With Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (pictured above) releasing on XBLA to critical acclaim, I can't wait to see what Crystal Dynamics has in store next for one of our favorite female game protagonists. We've heard something is in the works, and if a new rumor is to be believed, we may be going back to Lara's roots in her next adventure.

Eurogamer is reporting on a brief description for the game that apparently originates from the latest issue of PC Gamer. It's unclear if the synopsis is from a rumor section or if it's an official confirmation, and unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the issue in question to check.

The PC Gamer write-up says that the game features "one cohesive level with multiple ways around the puzzles" and a Lara who is "younger and inexperienced in the ways of raiding tombs."

Until there's an official announcement from Square Enix/Eidos, you should consider this a rumor. Personally, though, the idea of exploring a more open environment full of the platforming and deadly traps that the Tomb Raider games are known for sounds very cool. Think it would be enough to draw you in for Lara's newest journey?
