Diablo III Health System Details

by Adam Biessener on Sep 12, 2010 at 07:00 AM

We already knew about the changing role of potions and the existence of health globes in Blizzard's much-anticipated action/RPG, but the official site has some new details of interest.

For one thing, bosses and minibosses will sometimes drop health globes (which restore a portion of your hit points,  but can't be banked in your inventory like potions) during the fight as you beat through their formidable health pools or pound through their defenses. Since health potions are cooldown-limited, expensive, and somewhat rare, this will be key to dealing with more powerful monsters.

Blizzard also states that each proper boss (the big scripted guys, not the randomly generated champion and rare mobs) has a specific style of health recovery associated with the fight. The example given is a boss who summons a bunch of additional minions. Taking time away from killing the boss is a bad thing, but you'll have to pop at least some of the little dudes to get the sweet, juicy red globes they drop upon death.

I'm running out of superlatives to use to describe my anticipation for Diablo III. Let's hope it stays in the fiscal 2011 window that Activision leaked its release as in that investor meeting months ago.
