Reader Discussion: What Do You Think Of Serial Killer Games?

by Ben Reeves on Aug 25, 2010 at 04:00 PM

Designing games around serial killers is nothing new, but RPGCodex poster TheCrimsonKing, has been working on a serial killer roguelike and we’re curious what you think about it.

In TheCrimsonKing’s game, players get to create their own character or pick from a preset list of characters like Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, and Aileen Wuornos and then get to wander a city, donning disguises, picking locks, and killing strangers. Check out a video of the game in action.

We’re not interested in demonizing TheCrimsonKing or his work, but we are curious if this kind of game is completely innocent.

Do serial killer games offer the general public the chance to explore the darker aspect of humanity within a safe environment?

Or are games of this type dangerous to the mental stability of people who aren’t mature enough to perceive their virtues?

Or do games that portray truly despicable acts have no merit, and do you think they shouldn't be made?

We certainly have our own opinion, but we’d like to hear yours.
