I Want This Creepy Pokémon Hack To Be Real

by Phil Kollar on Aug 04, 2010 at 05:25 PM

I love video games, but one core element that's difficult to find in the medium is terror. I'm talking real, flat-out, pure fright. Plenty of games give you the shocks and jolts of gruesome enemies jumping out of nowhere and goring your main character, but not enough totally mess with you and make you feel sick to your stomach with dread. Tonight, I stumbled onto the legend of just such a game.

The folks over at Tiny Cartridge posted the unsettling story of a collector of hacked Pokémon carts who randomly discovered a cartridge that contained more than he'd bargained for. Titled "Pokémon Black Version," what began as a straight rip of Pokémon Red took a turn for the weird with the offer of a new "Ghost" Pokémon. This powerful creature came with a "Curse" ability that not only instantly kills other Pokémon, but their trainers as well.

I won't ruin the (seriously messed up) ending, but let's just say using the Ghost Pokémon has a price. Check out the full write-up on Tiny Cartridge. It's well worth a read, even if the supposed hack may not exist.

Oh and whether or not the original version exists, a team of ROM hackers has banded together to make it a reality. Even knowing about the twists, I think I'm going to need to go out of my way to play this hack if it's ever finished.
