Sega: No Alpha Protocol 2

by Matthew Kato on Jul 06, 2010 at 04:45 AM

Due to poor sales, publisher Sega will not go forward with a second installment in the espionage RPG by Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment.

Speaking to CVG, Sega West president Mike Hayes was very blunt about the failings of the first game (check our review here). "Let's speak very commercially; the game hasn't sold what we've expected, therefore we won't be doing a sequel." While the game's tailored dialog and character progression system were impressive on paper, on the whole Alpha Protocol was a mess. Perhaps Hayes though that Sega and Obsidian had bitten off more than they could chew. "Whilst we had a good game, I don't think we had a game that had enough to get us to that upper echelon, and I think that was the issue. Again, the amount you need to invest to get there is so large because RPGs are naturally big projects."

The game was delayed multiple times, and since its release, we've personally heard stories that Alpha Protocol's creation was anything but a smooth affair. Regardless of the flaws of the title, it looks like for now there won't be any chance to right the wrongs of the RPG.
