Spaceships For Everyone In Star Wars: The Old Republic

by Adam Biessener on Jun 14, 2010 at 12:55 PM

Onstage at EA’s E3 press conference, BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk announced that every player will be able to earn their own personal spacecraft in upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Zeschuk described your ship’s role as both an “expression of your personal style” and a base to explore the galaxy from. Dr. Zeschuk went on to introduce the game’s PvP system, which pits Empire versus Republic in dedicated “warzones” on the ground. A new pre-rendered trailer then debuted to end the press conference with a bang.

One of The Old Republic’s warzones is on Princess Leia’s ill-fated homeworld of Alderaan, which also serves as the setting for the newly unveiled “Hope” trailer. The impressive animation shows a grizzled veteran leading a company of Republic soldiers in a valiant fight against battle droids (ugh) and Imperials. Not long after ambushing a column of enemy troops, the good guys are set upon and torn apart by a squad of dark Jedi, only to be saved by a friendly Jedi before the coup de grace can be administered to the sergeant. The expected (and awesome) lightsaber duel ensues, and culminates with some kind of Force-powered hadouken blasting the lead Sith into an outcropping of rock.

The Old Republic will be playable (once again) on the E3 show floor, so swing back later this week for hands-on impressions of Republic vs. Empire PvP action.
