Nintendo Unveils Wii Party

by Tim Turi on May 07, 2010 at 06:01 AM

Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, and Wii Music, and now…Wii Party.  The next big thing from Nintendo is a party game for the Nintendo Wii. The game will fully utilize Miis and motion control to deliver the first first-party Nintendo party game since Mario Party 8.

During the investment call, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained that developers are taking their time with Wii Party. They wish to ensure that gamers have enough content to keep them busy, while ensuring that everyone who picks up a Wii Remote finds a game they truly love.

Miis are being used as Wii Party’s player characters. In case you’re thinking that Miis are so passé, Iwata confirmed that over 160 million Miis have been cobbled together between Japan, U.S., and Europe. He equates gamers’ passion for crafting Miis to the Tomodachi craze, stating that it’s a natural move for these characters to be fully usable in a game.

No game modes were fully revealed in the English translation of the call, but Andriasang's Japanese translation offers a little to chew on. Teiban Party is 1-4 players and includes standard games like Roulette, Bingo, Overseas Trip Game, and Dice. Pair Party is for two players and includes the modes Balance Ship, Compatibility Check, and Mii Alignment. Finally there’s Living Party, for 2+ players, which will offer games that could only be played with the Wii Remote.

We expect to hear more about Wii Party at E3 this year, perhaps with an amazing live performance. In the meantime, we’re just happy that Nintendo is trying something other than Mario Party…
