Remedy Planning To Make Alan Wake 2

by Phil Kollar on Apr 12, 2010 at 11:23 AM

We're still a little over a month from the release of Remedy's eagerly-awaited horror thriller Alan Wake, but the developer is already in love with the character and concept they've created. In fact, if they have their way, they'll be working on episodic additions to the first game followed by a sequel soon.

In an interview with Joystiq, Remedy head of franchise development Oskari Häkkinen revealed details on the company's intent to make Alan Wake...well, a franchise:

"We've definitely thought of Alan Wake to be bigger than just one game. That goes without saying. You don't develop for five years and then leave it at that, it doesn't make sense. So, from a story perspective, we've definitely mapped out where Alan Wake, the character, will go. We've mapped it out pretty far, as well. Just to give the short or near-future view, Alan Wake 1 is Season One, if you like, which is a complete story. When the gamers get their hands on it, they shouldn't think that we've left anything out of the game, because we haven't."

Häkkinen went on to clarify that downloadable content for the game will be stand-alone stories about Wake rather than a continuation of the game, which should reach a satisfying conclusion on its own. He said that the episodes will "reach between Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2," adding, "they will ultimately foreshadow Alan Wake 2."

In case it's not already 100% clear, Häkkinen came right out about their intent to make Alan Wake 2:

"We definitely want to make Alan Wake 2. We have the story mapped out. We know where it's taking us. As I said, season one will be conclusive but there'll be doors left open for a bigger story and we want to have the opportunity to give the fans the view on what those open doors lead to."

Obviously, it'll be a bit longer before we know for certain, but based off of what I've seen so far, Alan Wake certainly seems like an intriguing enough character to carry a franchise. Here's hoping the game lives up to Remedy's great expectations when it launches on May 18.
