The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Announcement & Trailer

by Adam Biessener on Mar 24, 2010 at 07:35 AM

Atari announced this morning that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings will be coming to North American PCs. We don't know when, but we're reasonably happy with the news that original developer (and IP owner) CD Projekt RED of Poland is creating the game. Plus, the trailer (below) looks sweet.

The announcement carried the bare minimum of information, saying only that the game is built on new tech developed in-house at CD Projekt RED and that it has a "mature, non-linear plot." Adam Kicinski, CEO of CD Projekt RED, unsurprisingly expects the title to be "loved by fans of the original and newcomers alike."

I'm loving this news. The Witcher, based on the dark fiction of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, was one of my all-time favorite video game surprises. The action-packed RPG unapologetically thrust players into a gritty, adult, low fantasy world. The Witcher pulled no punches; heroes were flawed and people died. Unusual but interesting combat and progression systems kept players engaged and gave all the incentive needed to adventure through the fantastic setting.

How about you? Did you play The Witcher, or is your video game experience horribly incomplete?*

*snark not applicable to our younger readers; The Witcher is emphatically not intended for anyone under the age of 18. Or maybe 25.
