Nintendo DS Successor Already Being Developed For?

Details have surfaced from GDC at San Francisco, CA pointing to a potential release this year of Nintendo’s DS follow-up. This isn’t a new iteration of existing DS tech, either. The report mentions dual screens being used as one, an accelerometer, and development kits comparable to the GameCube.

Raymond Padilla questioned anonymous developers that claimed to be working on the “DS2” (no official name was revealed). Allegedly, the system will also have two screens even larger than the DS, but the gap between them will be so narrow that games will utilize both to display one big picture. We'd like to see a DS where the "other" screen can be used for something other than a map, so this is a good start.

The development kit is said to be comparable in power to the GameCube. Game creators who are familiar with the GameCube or Wii will be right at home crafting games for the new handheld. Developers busy working on games said there isn’t much of a learning curve.

Additionally, an accelerometer is said to be incorporated into the handheld. If you’ve toyed around with pretty much any smart phone, you’re familiar with the screen tilting action. We imagine this will lead to many balance beam and pinball minigames.

These game creators said the games for the new handheld will be completed by the end of the year. Whether Nintendo releases the unit by then is still mysterious. However, enigmatic sources say that we might see an E3 2010 announcement and a release later this year.

Keep in mind that none of this information is official. We’ll keep you posted if anything new comes up.

In the meantime, what do you think of the fabled “DS2” these hardware specs allude to?

  • DEFINITELY looking forward to this

  • I wonder if it will be a combination of the gamecube and the ds. I've heard rumors in the past about gamecube discs being made small so they can later make a portable system for them.

  • Bring pokemon pinball to this and make the system as thick as the ds Lite and have a slot for ds games. We'll have a winner

  • Accelerometer, called that. Screen thing sounds like gold, But I'm wondering how a handheld can support gamecube power.

  • I really need a new DS. The L and R buttons on the back won't work at all. If they make this new DS anytime soon, I'll look into it.

  • Don't like that they release a new version every year :|

  • I really need a way to stop wasting all those hours i spend away from my consoles...

  • I still own my original launch DS Phat and was abut to buy a new DSi, but this makes me want to hold off until at least E3 and see if anything is said.  All i am asking for is that it can still play original DS games...kinda backlogged on that system...

  • That'd be hilarious if it ended up being the WiiDS; like in the GameInfarcer parody...

  • Don't be so quick to hate on the 2nd screen map.  That's one of the nicest features of having dual screens.  I love not having to go to a sub-screen to see a map.

Also, if this is the true next generation Nintendo handheld I say finally.  Enough with the DS already.

  • I hope other companies dont start pumping consoles out in quick succession like the DS to the point where no one has the current console.

I feel like we are going to be swamped with a new generation of consoles to soon with all this new 3D crap and other advancments in technology.

  • There is absolutely no need for there to be a new Nintendo handheld.  The DS is still going strong, and making a new one is just abandoning the DS.

  • HD DS = Win

I would get an HD portable system (that isn't $600).

  • Geez is the DSi XL even out yet?

A new DS2 would be great, but since I got my own car I don't really play my regular DS anymore on trips since I don't want to hit something.

I prefer to save my money for PS3 games. They last longer.

  • **yaaaaaay**

  • good

  • Honestly, not too excited... I liked not having to upgrade every few years and being able to stick with my DS Lite.

  • Does UNintendo really need another new addition to their gaming units already ? How many gaming units does a company need 2 have out all at once.....come on?

  • It looks cool, but right now, I'd rather have an awesome Star Fox game for the Wii than another DS.

  • Personally, I'm hoping for this:

That entire Kotaku article made me drool.

Also, just going to throw this out there because it's funny:
