Sony has announced that it has acquired LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule, joining the company's Worldwide Studios network of first-party studios.

The Surrey, England-based studio hit it big with the platforming adventures of the lovable Sackboy, and recently the developer celebrated two million user-created levels for the game.

"Since they burst onto the gaming scene," said Shuhei Yoshia, president of SCE Worldwide Studios, "Media Molecule have proved to be a truly exciting and innovative studio, who have proved their world-class credentials with the creation of the incredible LittleBigPlanet. SCE WWS is all about creating ambitions, innovative and ground-breaking games, traits that Media Molecule clearly have."

For his part, Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans was just as effusive. "Since Media Molecule's inception, we've had a uniquely close relationship with SCE. Over the years they have consistently shown their dedication to creative gaming and Media Molecule, not only through their support of the company, but their willingness to take risks and embrace our often unusual approach and ideas."
