Rebellion Happy With AvP Sales, Disappointed With Some Reviews

by Ben Reeves on Feb 22, 2010 at 06:25 AM

Last week's release of Aliens vs. Predator was the talk of the internet. A few negative reviews caused quite a controversy among those who felt the game wasn’t being given a fair shake (yeah, we were one of those reviews), but that didn’t stop the game from selling – at least in Europe. The game shot to number one on the European charts, outpacing BioShock 2 and Mass Effect 2.

Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley talked with news site www.develop-online.net about how happy he was with the game’s overall sales. “We wanted Aliens vs. Predator to be a critical success as well as a commercial success, which we think we have achieved,” said Kingsley. “The reviews have been mostly good. We’ve had three totally *** reviews by some Americans, which is a bit odd. [Us again.] Some of them were inexcusably bad.”

Kingsley went on to say. “We’re also in discussions with Sega about ongoing support for AvP, and also about a sequel to the game.” While this is far from an official announcement of a sequel, it is good news for fans of the game.

It could also mean good news for British developers in general. Europe often seems to play second fiddle next to Japan and the U.S., but games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, LittleBigPlanet, and Heavenly Sword have proved there is plenty of talent on the other side of the pond. So any success from a British developer could be good for the market as a whole. According to the same www.develop-online.net story, UK studios are fighting for tax breaks that would help them remain more cost effective in the competitive global marketplace.
