EA Shutting Down More Games Nobody Plays Online

by Tim Turi on Feb 17, 2010 at 12:06 PM

EA announced a couple weeks ago that it was shutting down the online servers for slightly older games like Madden 09, NCAA Football 09, and Fight Night Round 3. They’re not stopping there, though. Today EA released a list of 12 titles that are being castrated of their online play in the next couple months. Hope you don’t like Lord of the Rings: Conquest or Burnout 3.

Here’s the full list of games on death row:

Online Service Shutdown for March 16, 2010:
Def Jam for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Godfather for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Lord of the Rings: Conquest for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames for PC
Need for Speed: Carbon for PlayStation Portable
Need for Speed: ProStreet for PlayStation Portable
The Simpsons Game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

Online Service Shutdown for April 15, 2010:

Burnout 3: Takedown for PlayStation 2
Army of Two for PlayStation 3 (Asia only)

Original Xbox Live titles getting chopped:

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for Xbox
Burnout 3: Takedown for Xbox
Madden NFL 09 for Xbox

Lord of the Rings: Conquest only released a year ago, and EA is already pulling the plug. I can’t help but wonder if this will affect the resale potential of this game and other future games that are prematurely amputated of online play. What would you do if Activision took the same course of action and pulled the plug on an earlier Call of Duty title?
