Final Fantasy VII Remake Still Not In The Works

by Joe Juba on Feb 05, 2010 at 09:27 AM

The Final Fantasy VII remake is currently the most popular non-existent game in the industry. Rumors of a high-definition reimagining of the classic RPG are rekindled on a monthly basis, but most gamers aren't aware of the many technical hurdles such a project would present.

Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase explains in an interview with Ultimania magazine (as reported by The Lost Gamer) that a Final Fantasy VII remake isn't just a simple matter of rebuilding a few assets. In order to create visuals that meet the modern standards, a team developing a Final Fantasy VII remake (which, to be clear, is not currently happening) would have to spend a great deal of time and effort designing a current-gen look for the game consistent with its roots.

“This issue is related to whether a Final Fantasy VII remake will happen or not," Kitase says. "It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time.”

While we're on the subject of remakes that will probably never happen, what old games are you hoping against hope will get the current-gen treatment? Mine's Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist.
