Apple Unveils iPad

by Dan Ryckert on Jan 27, 2010 at 07:30 AM

As rumored for weeks, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad today at an Apple event in San Francisco. Much of the speculation has proven true, as the tablet computer essentially looks like a gigantic iPhone with a 10-inch screen. Significantly smaller and lighter than a laptop computer, it weighs in at 1.5 pounds and is only half an inch thick.

"What this device does is extraordinary. You can browse the web with it. It is the best browsing experience you’ve ever had. It’s phenomenal to see a whole web page right in front of you that you can manipulate with your fingers," Jobs said. "Way better than a laptop, way better than a smartphone…it’s a dream to type on."

Like the iPod and iPhone, the iPad will be available in different sizes - 16, 32, and 64GB. Features are similar to the phone, with Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, speaker, and microphone built in (although it omits the camera). It can run for 10 hours on a fully charged battery, with over a month of standby life. It runs on a 1ghz Apple A4 chip, and every iPhone app and game will be usable with no modifications whatsoever.

Games have been a success on the iPhone, so it's no surprise that they were included in this presentation. EA showed off Need For Speed Shift, complete with accelerometer controls. Also shown was an FPS called Nova, an ESPN snowboarding game, and an MLB game.

The iPad will ship in 60 days (3G models in 90 days), with a price point of $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. 3G versions of the iPad will retail for $629, $729, and $829, respectively.
