Microsoft Re-Charging For Game Room Arcade Games

At this year's CES convention, Microsoft unveiled its plan to create an Xbox Live Game Room where you can go and play arcade classics. Through the years we've had ample opportunities to play cherished titles like Tempest – perhaps you've already bought some of those games via Xbox Live Arcade. Now, the 360's Game Room is going to make you pay for them again.

Any Game Room arcade titles that you may have already bought as Xbox Live Arcade games won't transfer over to the Game Room, which is due this spring. We talked to a Microsoft representative on the topic, who told us that the company considers the Game Room titles different from their XBLA counterparts because they are the original versions and not "revamped" like those on XBLA. Game Room games will cost between 240 and 400 MS points, so even though you may have to buy them a second time, they should at least be cheaper than those you've already bought.

Would you buy any of these classic titles a second time just to have the original arcade version, or are you fine with the enhanced XBLA ones you already paid for?

  • I will not re-buy my arcade games, even if they are the original. I am one for classic games and if M$ can't include an additional "room" to house the remade games - oh well. It's probably easier to select my Arcade games through NXE menus anyway...?

  • Just like Home on the PS3. I fail to see the point? Between LIVE Parties and XBLA games, users are getting content and easy communication with other players. Why add the extra step of having to walk around a virtual arcade to play a game?

  • nope i would no get them a 2 time

  • Wow, Microsoft! HA! That is so Dick. Actually, I'm impressed. That takes some serious balls. I'm in awe of the massive amount of balls it takes to come up with an idea like this and then get it greenlit. If I ever have a son I'm going to sit him down, point to this and say, "Son, this is what you need to do to be a man."

  • No...this is f'd up

  • My first reply to the article didn't make too much sense...and didn't answer the question directly.

I will buy original games but I will not buy (i.e. Pacman) again since i own Championship Edition. It's essentially the same game with added features. It was a game that brought nostalgia and a fresh outlook on the original game. Same with Space invaders.

I have a feeling my Game Room is going to be empty...

I do plan on purchasing Pitfal! and Adventure...unless they "revamp" it.

The problem is - I'm spoiled. Most remakes INCLUDE original versions of the game.

If i'm stuck with an odd amount of M$ points, maybe.

  • Facepalm.

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Staff

    oh, they're serious?

  • i wont rebuy games but i dont have all their dl games so what i dont have i might get there

  • my dig dug i would only pay for rally x

  • I smell another M$ lawsuit on the horizon!

  • @Colin McConville actually, this is almost nothing like Home. Home is meant to be a virtual social space, like a 3D myspace or what have you. this thing is a virtual arcade with a nice, pretty menu to get to each game. the games in Home are largely secondary to the social experience.

  • but remember microsoft loves us if we buy more stuff i love you to microsoft

Money Spent on live + 234$ < just a estimate

  • ms points to use this feature?? that is weak come on give it to us free.

  • *laughing

of course they're going to ask us to repurchase arcade titles...  that's a Dick move, something M$ has become quite proficient at.  i've heard of double-dipping but even i'm impressed at the level of arrogance on display here.

that ends my interest in 'Game Room'.

  • What's the point of giving us a virtual arcade room only to have us purchase the games that which you want to represent? Seriously that is dumb.

If I wanted to chat with my friends while playing a classic game I would do it over a party chat while playing the revamped version. Yeah the originals are great but no point in buying the same thing since most of everyone has it on their Wii anyways, that is if you own one.

  • Turning a bad idea worse. Mmm I like it.

  • I had some hope that this game room thing maybe just maybe might have been free and now not only is it not free theyre making you pay again oh microsoft...

  • I'm not buying something twice, no matter what. I already used my money on it once.
