Final Fantasy VIII Hits PSN, People Complain It’s Not VII Again

Final Fantasy VIII is the universal underdog of Square Enix’s beloved franchise. The overlooked RPG, which is virtually unable to be spoken of without being compared to Final Fantasy VII, is hitting the PlayStation Network today.

“We’re very excited to share the Final Fantasy VIII experience with not only a new generation of RPG gamers, but also all of our long-time Final Fantasy fans,” said president and chief executive officer of Square Enix, John Yamamoto “Final Fantasy VII received an incredibly warm reception on the PlayStation Network, and we are thrilled to see what possibilities this latest release of Final Fantasy VIII will bring to the franchise.”

Uniquely compelling and infinitely under-appreciated, the story of Squall and Rinoa deserves a closer look by anyone who has scoffed at the game for its lack of blocky characters. If you’ve got a bad taste in your mouth from all the FFVII oversaturation in years past, FFVIII may be the answer.

The game is available for $9.99 and can be played on your PlayStation 3, PSP, or PSP Go.

    IT'S NOT FINAL FANTASY VII.

  • the only thing i didn't like about this game was the fact that you can just spam the summonings.  what's the point of even having weapons?  also, hated the fact that you had to find "parts" to make your weapons better.  i never finished this one though, and i'm glad i'll have a second chance to do so.

  • Awesome. One of my personal favorites, I hope everyone else gives it a shot.

  • Finally! This game popped my Final Fantasy cherry. I saw an older friend playing this and gave it a try. Changed my gaming life forever.  To all the haters, this is a spectacular game.  I am going straight home right now to buy this and play from beginning to end.  Modern Warfare 2 will not be touched until I have every summon and Omega Weapon is felled. Awesome.

  • Wow, I loved FF VIII. I won't be downloading it unless it doesn't work when I pop the disc in.

  • Awesome! Can't wait to download this now...just lacking funds atm. My first FF game ever, btw.

  • I think the game was awesome. I don't think the story was the strongest following FFVII, but still the gameplay was fun, the soundtrack was great, and the cutscenes were stellar.

  • Loved this game but i love pretty much any Final Fantasy that has ever came out. They did things a little different in this one but still was very good, hope people give it a chance well worth the money!

  • this was the only FF i came close to beating (i got to the last disc!) then i started it over for some reason. i still have my PSOne copy of it so i'm not dishing out $10 for this.

  • I still have the original PSX discs for this but it's cool that they're available for people whose PS3s aren't backwards compatible.

  • @ Phil: Hahahahahahaha! Thanks for the laugh. =D

    That's not a bad price...

If I didn't still have it for PSone.

Everybody else though, should buy this and play the crap out of it.

  • FFVIII is my favorite Final Fantasy. I don't care what you say.

  • This is my all time favorite Final Fantasy game. VII was good, but, I just didn't feel it. MUST DOWNLOAD NOW.

  • Although I hated the whole "sniff yer fingers while you watch yer gf kill stuff" feeling, I definitely enjoyed the game. VIII was the first one I ever played so it has a special place in my heart. Look folks VII is indeed awesome but lets face it, its a tad bit overrated dontcha think? I love that VIII continued the trend of inconcievably difficult secret boss battles though. Omega weapon in X is about as dangerous as a bag of kittens compared to the one in VIII.

    Love it.

  • Yeah, FFVIII isnt as good as FFVII and it's one of the FF titles I like the least (though its good). I think that Square would have been better to release the Anthology or Chronicles to PSN, then IX and THEN VIII that way people could build to it and see it as the last one int he PS collection to get and boost sales of it that way.

  • And as far as GF "spamming" goes, if it bugs you, just don't do it. Use them as sparingly as you would in any other Final Fantasy. I never really liked using them in the first place. The stat boosts are their only real practical use, except for maybe Eden, but anyone whose played it knows how long that takes.  The strategy it takes to beat difficult enemies is one of the main draws for me in RPGs. I'd equate spamming GFs to camping in a FPS. Yeah, it might be effective, but is it fun?

  • This game didn't get the attention it needed. In every way but one I found it better larger and more appealing then 7. I really enjoyed Cloud, I liked how he wasn't normal and he was abit insane. But Squall is a hero, Cloud is an anti-hero. I'm a fan of Cloud but not FF7, that's why FF8 is my number one. It happen to appeal to more then just wanting to play as one guy. I enjoyed FF8 more then all others I hope everyone gives this game a chance.

  • ill pay it, this game was awesome.

  • Personally i want Final Fantasy VII
