UPDATE: Modern Warfare 2 Javelin Glitching Will Get You Suspended From Xbox Live

by Adam Biessener on Dec 08, 2009 at 05:00 AM

UPDATE: A patch that fixes the Javelin glitch and others has been submitted to Microsoft, per the ever-useful Twitter of Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling. PlayStation 3 modern warriors already have the patch. Modern Warfare 2 version 1.06 addresses the Javelin issue as well as fixing bugs involving infinite care packages and getting into the geometry (i.e. the rocks in Afghan).

It's good to see a relatively quick response from a developer when something like this crops up in online play. In an ideal world it wouldn't be there in the first place, but not everyone can take six years to build a game.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Xbox Live team is handing out 24-hour suspensions (or up to two weeks for repeat offenders) to gamers caught using the Javelin glitch in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, per the service's policy and enforcement director Stephen Toulouse's Twitter.

The glitch, which causes abusers to explode in a fiery inferno when they die, has obvious balance ramifications. Infinity Ward and Microsoft are taking it seriously enough to have a fix already in testing (according to Robert Bowling of IW's Twitter) and enforce the aforementioned suspensions.

Cue comments defending the Javelin glitch as "creative use of game mechanics" in 3...2...1...
