Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway Says Price Drop Has Spurred Wii Sales Increases
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Nintendo's executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway revealed that a recent price drop has reignited sales of the Wii. After Wii sales had plummeted 43 percent from April to September of 2009, the new $199 MSRP seems to be luring in new customers as planned. Dunaway claimed that weekly sales have been up 85 percent since the price drop, allowing the Wii to regain its title of the best selling console in the market for October after falling behind the PlayStation 3 in September. The system's profile has also been boosted by recent sequels to some of its mega-franchises, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit Plus, and Wii Sports Resort.
"I think going into the holidays, the Wii is in a very good position," Dunaway said. "It has an unbeatable combination of games, experience and unbeatable value, and that continues to put it to the top of people's wish list."
Still, even despite the rising sales statistics, it appears unlikely that the Wii will match its sales totals set in 2008, when it moved 10 million consoles.
