God Help Us: Miyamoto Says Wii Music Sequel Is Possible

by Matt Helgeson on Nov 17, 2009 at 06:29 AM

Whether you're a fan of video games, music, control mechanics that actually work, or have ears, chances are you probably didn't like Nintendo's ill-fated Wii Music. Judging by the game's sales figures, that group includes the vast majority of Wii owners. Still, like Creed's reunion tour, Wii Music is apparently one audible scourge that can't be eradicated by small matters like the public's total lack of interest.

In a recent interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, master developer Shigeru Miyamoto reveals that he's actually considering a sequel to the game, despite its disappointing sales.

"I think it sold lower than our expectations but on the other hand it was a really unique game, I have to say," Miyamoto told ONM. "And also, even today, we are receiving several different offers from people in the field of music education, so as far as Wii Music is concerned, I think is still has great potential. And in the future there might be some developments."

Given the fact that most of our experiences with Wii Music sounded like a group of heavily medicated rhinos plowing through an orchestral performance of "Muzak's Greatest Hits," one wonders what the possible educational possibilities for a future title could be. On what possible features a new Wii Music title could offer, the characteristically secretive Miyamoto was not forthcoming, stating only that ""We may want to think about the possibility of making some improvements, based upon the original Wii Music." He went on to cite the various enhancements that were implemented in Wii Fit Plus as a possible indication of the direction the new music game might take.
