Bioware Talks Co-op For Future Dragon Age and Mass Effect Games

Did this weekend’s morsel about possible co-op in God of War III get you thinking about other games that might benefit from some coordinated action? Were Dragon Age or Mass Effect some of those games? Well, BioWare co-founder and CEO Ray Muzyka is definitely considering it.

Muzyka tells Video Gamer that the company believes co-op "could make a great gameplay experience."

"Sure, we would consider it. We haven't announced anything on that front yet, but those are interesting ideas. They could make a great gameplay experience. Whether we'll do them or not remains to be decided," says Muzyka.

Taking into account that the bulk of BioWare’s RPGs are tailor-made for engrossing single-player experiences, Muzyka suggested that multiple players could detract from the experience. "It might depend on how you do it... It's hard to weave a great single-player storyline into a multiplayer experience,” he says. “It's not impossible. We've done it, and we're doing it again now in Star Wars: The Old Republic. But it is challenging."

From what I’ve seen of The Old Republic’s dual-dialogue trees with multiple party members, this definitely seems like a possibility. Anybody dreaming about having a biotic-inclined buddy throw an enemy in the air for you to gun down in co-op Mass Effect? I know I am.

  • That sounds awesome to me. Don't get me wrong I love Single Player Campaigns, but Co-Op is becoming the standard for any game. If I'm ever on the fence for a certain game (I.E. Demon's Souls) if it has co-op that pushes me over the edge. I would love to see more Co-Op for games like this, I think it'll be fun to co-ordinate attacks and combos.

  • BTW where's the co-op in Assassins Creed 2, surely I would like to take down a heavily guarded king or Member of the church with a couple of friends!

  • I think co-op is awesome, I just hope they don't take it overboard and start forcing co-op only play. Ie. I think borderlands vs RE:5 is a good example. Borderlands you can play either way and have a great experience, RE:5 can get really annoying single player.

Either way though Co-op has been a great way to get me and my GF gaming together in games I know she normally wouldn't play(see the above 2 games, lol). So I say keep em comin!

Oh and for Christ sake all you PC games better allow Co-op through lan, none of this online in order to play someone right next to me crap *evil eyes at blizzard*

  • I love co-op game, but in my opinion I think adding a co-op to mass effect would kill the story for me. Just leave it the way it is.

  • me too lol

  • Not sure how the dialoge would work

  • Mass effect 2 is gonna be awesome

  • These games would work with Co-op nicely since everyone's created character is, in theory, different especially in a game like Dragon Age. But the GOd of War Co-Op thing doesn't really make that much sense. I mean, unless it's just a separate gameplay mode like MW2's then it's going to get weird with two Kratos...es. I mean... think about the poor defenseless Harpies, they really aren't going to stand any chance at all now.

  • Let's hope the system is not like it was in Fable 2.

  • This would be a awesome idea also i like how they say future Mass Effect and Dragon Age games meaning i hope Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 now most likely it will be expansion packs.

I'd be down with specific co-op modes and missions, but I would be disappointed if the main campaign isn't single-player focused.

  • It sounds cool, but I'm kind of agreeing with the statement that Mass Effect provides engrossing single-player experiences.  While it would be fun for a short while, I feel that ultimately people will just want to play by themselves.  But who knows.

  • @joe: I know excatly what your saying. The reason these game are so awesome is because developers don't have to take up so much time considering all the variables that co op would bring to their game. Prime examples of awesome single player games without any sort of co op: Fallout series, Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, and so on and so on.

  • That's great news. Some games I would say "Why?" to having Co-op or Multiplayer, but this 2 games fit perfect for it. Bioware continues to surprise me.

  • I like my share of Co-op but I find that it's mostly online these days and I need some split screen to play with some of my buds. Rightnow that's a big draw to Borderlands.

  • In Mass Effect? I'm not sure that would work well with the story. Maybe in a separate campaign or something.

  • sounds like a disaster

  • there are some games out there that should just stay single player, and mass effect is one of them (along with God of War for that matter). it seems nowadays, developers are ready to throw in co-op in every game they make. sometimes, its just not neccessary. COULD it work in Mass Effect? maybe. there is a 3-man team. but if everyone was off doing their own thing, then whats the point of Commander Sheppard? its a squad based gameplay, and not being able to dictate how your allies fight really ruins that.

  • Co-op in games is a very cool game mode.  Co-op should be in a lot of games.

  • I wanted DA to have co-op, let alone multiplayer. It is a good game to play. Very long at that...but it could have had more to it.
