Rock Band 3 To Get More Realistic

Touring in support of his new album with thenewno2, Dhani Harrison has let slip an interesting detail regarding the next Rock Band installment. The son of Beatle George Harrison has apparently stayed on at Harmonix after his work bringing The Beatles: Rock Band to reality.

In a chat with the Chicago Tribune, Harrison said, “"I'm working on Rock Band 3 and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game. Give me a couple years, it's going to happen."

Harrison also dropped hints with the Boston Herald: “Now Harrison is working on Rock Band 3 to make it even more realistic. His goal: to get the game to actually teach people to play music, not just to pantomime in rhythm.”

What do you think of this potentially new direction for Rock Band 3? Are you excited by the new realism or will things get too complicated?

  • If I wanted to learn to play music, I'd take lessons.

  • it would be cool to learn to play the guitar while you play a game

...kinda like that except not from Disney?

  • I've had this in mind for a couple years now.. I think it's fantastic. I can't comprehend why anyone would be opposed to this.. unless you're scared :P  The difficulty will be more, sure, but hell.. if it's accurately portraying real chords and notes, even if simplified, how is that not going to help people? I play guitar myself, and I think this is a great idea if it can come to fruition.

  • Well at least if it thought you to play it wouldn't just be the same game with new graphics.

I actually agree with Sinister, although I understand where Matthew is coming from. I don't want to play  real guitar. I fail at musical instruments in real life, something that three years each of cello and piano taught me. I like that Rock Band and Guitar Hero are arcade-like and that they are accessible to people like me.

Fostering music appreciation is fantastic, so kudos for that. Just don't forget about us, the musically-challenged!

  • I think this is a great idea.  The coolest part about is all those hours invested into the game will actually let you learn an instrument.  so you could walk away from your tv and actually play the guitar.  fantastic!

  • it will be awesome. it always made mores sence this way anyways. not only that it will boost sales, if it can be used for more than just gaming

  • Can't wait.

  • That idea has been in my mind since the genre began. Glad Harmonix are the ones to finally take the initiative.

  • Harmonix is not the first to do this. But they might be the first to do it with songs that are worth playing.

  • Sound's cool to me.

  • Eh it'll be cool but i kinda like how its not super realistic.  I mean i play guitar, if i want to learn the songs on guitar i pick up my guitar, go to youtube, listen to the song and figure it out.  I want to play a game sometimes and guitar other times.  I don't know how i feel about doing it simultaneously

  • As long as they include 'realism' mode as an alternative option, I see no problem with it.

  • I already play music in real life so why would I want to do this?  I play these games to have fun and to hear good music.  If I could play every song in Rock Band that I have on my iPod, that'd be mind-blowing.  Sometimes I just feel like listening to music and being able to play them in a game is a dream come true.  I'm not against this idea as long as they keep it fun though.

Meagan is not lying about playing cello. I saw her perform for the great composer Nobuo Uematsu. Be sure to ask her about it.

  • so it'll finally be like playing a real guitar? i'm all for that. i'm still miffed about the first time i ever played guitar hero, and how NONE of my actual guitar playing skills helped me, at all.

I just want to play a real guitar as well as I can play the Rock Band one.  Now.  NAO!

  • Awesome!

  • im not sure about that but if done right it could be fun.
