I was rather surprised when Nintendo announced that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be releasing a mere five days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- revealed just as dozens of other games were leaping into 2010 seemingly in an effort to get out of the way of Activision's juggernaut. Apparently Nintendo isn't terribly concerned, though. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was on GameTrailers TV this week to discuss New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and he admitted that he believes the title will sell more on the Wii than Modern Warfare 2 will on any of its platforms individually.
"Absolutely. I say that unequivocally," Reggie said in response to host Geoff Keighley's question of whether New Super Mario Bros. Wii could outsell Modern Warfare 2 even on a single platform. "On one particular platform? I do believe so." Keighley clarified that he meant it would sell more than on 360, and Fils-Aime agreed.
"Now, you've got to give me the entire holiday selling season," he continued. "So let's take it all the way through the January NPD data. I'll take that bet." He did agree, though, that it will be a close fight.
It's worth noting just how bizarre this holiday season is that we're surprised at Nintendo's insistence that a Mario game will sell well. Only a game as massive and all-consuming as Modern Warfare 2 could make us doubt the power of Nintendo's most well-known mascot. Who do you think will come out on top in this battle?
MW2 will sell moar. Most people don't even know Nintendo is dropping a new Mario title.
Sorry to say this but: "ROFL". Really? I can't believe he's that ballsy to lie so boldly like that.
modern warfare 2 will kick marios but.
I think that is a little optimistic for nintendo to state. but good luck. stranger things have happened
ha
Well, the target audience for NSMB is certainly much broader and there are a lot more Wiis out there than 360s so... maybe?
New Super Mario Bros is going to be a sure-fire massive seller, but Modern Warfare 2 is going to be a juggernaut.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
You wish.
Assassin's Creed 2
It doesn't matter. Everyone in the world loves Mario games. Even the people that say "OMG VIDEO GAMES ARE AWFUL!" recant their hate when you bring up an Mario game.
Is this a joke Gamestop has stated that Modern warfare 2 is their most pre-ordered game of all time!I think Nintendo should watch what they say,Modern Warfare 2 is expected to sell better than GTA 4(which was the biggest entertainment release of all time).New super Mario Bros Wii is not even a new game it is a port of a DS game, with some minor additions like co-op.
I guess you can't knock the guy for swinging for the fence..
@The Hero Gamer - I can say without a doubt this is certainly NOT a port.
Um... I'm pretty sure you're wrong hero. Everything released from the game looks to be brand new material. Honestly, Mario games are more fun than EVERY other game. Period. MW2 has a very specific audience, where as a Mario game's audience is anyone who can move their hands and see.
I don't know, I kind of agree with him. I wouldn't be at all surprised if New Super Mario Bros. outsold Modern Warfare 2. I think Modern Warfare 2 will sell more in a week or two weeks time. But considering that the Wii has a much larger presence and Mario is a solid title, I think that when the holiday buying season really gets kick started we will end up seeing NSMB on top.
I still say MW2, but...with all of the recent controversy on MW2, Nintendo might just stand a good chance.
I am and always have been a Nintendo Fanboi.
But... This just screams Joe Namath to me. The math is intriguing because the Wii install base is greater. But, MW2 has been VERY heavily marketed. The commercials were on during the World Series!
For his sake I hope he is right.
I personally feel it's more of a "tit for tat" thing. Infinity Ward basically said "Wii is too weak to handle MW2", and now Reggies says this?
I highly doubt NSMBW will outsell MW2 on the 360 (which is the 'lead' console as far as numbers goes). I say this even though NSMBW might be the game that gets me to purchase a Wii.
It seems that if parents don't preorder the Mario game then I guess that lots of people will want to buy it but won't be able to get their hands on it. Because I would say for the most part that parents probably don't get the idea of preording a game like hardcore gamers do. MW2 may win on just that fact.
Does everyone get what I'm saying here? Or am I a little confusing?
Idk about the rest of the world but at least my entire friends list and anyone I've talked to on XBL for the last 4 months always replys to "Hey what game are you getting next" Answer: "Not sure, maybe Borderlands, but Modern Warfare 2 no doubt"
