Next Zelda To Include MotionPlus Swordplay

As good as the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was, it was hard to shake the feeling that the Wii functionality was, well, tacked on. Players eager to live out their swashbuckling fantasies through the Gamecube port found their enthusiastic slashing was exactly as effective as making slight (and less taxing) gestures. It looks like that’s going to change with the next console installment of the Zelda franchise.

“In this (installment of the series), we’re using MotionPlus to make you feel much more like you’re actually fighting while holding a sword in your hand,” said Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto at a Q&A discussion in Tokyo. In addition to improving sword accuracy, it looks as though the inclusion of MotionPlus will enhance elements such as targeting.

That’s certainly great news for those of us who wanted a bit more from Twilight Princess’ swordplay, but it also raises a few questions. Will the action be this accurate for every encounter, from humble battles with Octoroks up to and including the inevitable boss showdown with Ganon? Or, will common enemies still be eliminated with well-timed flicks, saving more intricate sword battles for boss encounters? It will be interesting to see how Nintendo balances making sword combat rewarding and deep without forcing players to ice their arms between fights.

  • I refuse to play Zelda with a Wii motion remote.

  • I hope this actually works.

  • Fools! the best game on the Wii is.Zelda i just hope they pack the motion plus in with the game.

  • hardcore fans will prob be disappointed, it's gonna be difficult to grind out hours on end waving your hands around like an idiot...a possible QTE interaction might be cool with motion controls...I just have a feeling it's gonna feel like labor...not that most of this country couldn't use it

  • I'm just glad to hear news about a new Zelda game.  I've got my fingers crossed for it to be in the vein of Twilight Princess and not Wind Waker...

  • Can't they improve the swordplay without the wii motion plus? 'Cause that thing is annoying.

  • i firmly believe this game will tell us if motion control is really the future of gaming. Zelda games have always been known for their quality in both production values and gameplay. If this game can successfully use motion control and show us the true potential of the MotionPlus, then i think the Wii can recover. if this is a great game with little motion control, then whats the point?

  • and if anyone can make motion control work with a game like Zelda, its nintendo. i have complete faith, and cant wait to see what MotionPlus can really do.

  • Ugh, exercise.

I should NOT have to move violently and idiotically while playing video games.  Screw motion controls.

  • @ infectedCrypt666 -- You don't have to move violently and idiotically.  You have to move with purpose and control.  If you move violently and idiotically, you're probably doing it wrong anyway.

Please don't tell me I'm going to be forced to flail around like an idiot in order to play this game. Please...

  • @Jeff

You mean just like a real swordsman? ;)

What would be cool would be if they were to incorporate a sensitivity setting into the game, allowing you to adjust how much arm-flailing you would actually have to do, but I can't think of a game that has done that yet on the Wii.

  • why is everyone complaining? i think this is an awesome idea. lazy americans :P jk.. but im just happy its not a cartoony zelda. imagine how intense sword fights would be. its going to be a really cool game if it is made right.

  • I completely agree with you: the controls on Twilight Princess were quite delayed, or they would be overly responsive. Sometimes I would swing at a guy and Link would do a 3 move combo for no reason. But, in all honesty, the Wii is definitely not my favorite console, and I've given up on buying more games for it. Now I just play Xbox, but the only three games I play on it are Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime: Corruption, and Twilight Princess. If they make another Zelda game for the Wii, and I have to buy that MotionPlus, I guess I'll do it, since the franchise has always been good to me. I also wonder if it can sense if you slash up, maybe Link could do an uppercut. I don't know if that's truly possible, but one more little tidbit: they should ask if you're left-handed or not, because I am and every time I attacked, Link would use his right hand. It's just a suggestion because it doesn't feel right to me. Go Zelda!

  • They had better have an option for those of us that don't have a MotionPlus peripheral.

  • Mod

As long as battles don't become as easy as rapidly swinging the remote around to get in a ton of quick hits...

  • Nintendo better do something really, really, really unique or different with this new Zelda.

  • @Joseph Breen

Maybe it's just because the Wii can't actually sense the motions correctly.

  • ..."and including the inevitable boss showdown with Ganon?"

That's not always true, just that we hope he will be the end boss.

  • I've yet to be disappointed by a Zelda game. I loved Twilight Princess' motion controls and if they are being improved, that should only be better.
