Rare Looks To Innovate FPS With Natal

Perfect Dark was far from perfect, but that's not stopping U.K. developer Rare (creator of the legendary GoldenEye) from trying to take another stab at the first-person shooter genre. In an interview with MCV regarding the genre, Rare studio head Mark Betteridge put forth the developer's intention to use Microsoft's Natal to innovate in the company's next FPS.

"Right now our sights are trained on Natal," said Betteridge talking about the genre, "which is a great opportunity to break new ground with content and gameplay. It's also an opportunity to exercise some genre evolution..."

We've known that Rare was working with Natal since the controller-less motion control project was announced this E3, but it's interesting that it would choose the FPS genre.

Apart from whether this means the return of Perfect Dark or not, the genre hasn't normally been associated with Natal. Microsoft labelmates Epic, for instance, have clearly pointed out that you can't sacrifice the genre just to use Natal. Epic sees having to use a blending of using a traditional controller with Natal, and it'll be interesting to see if this is how Rare will utilize it as well.

We can imagine throwing grenades via Natal or reloading, for instance, but it would be difficult to replace the precision of aiming with the controller by pointing at the screen. What kinds of FPS mechanics do you think Natal could or couldn't handle? Are you interested in a Natal FPS?

  • I lost faith in Rare after they made Grabbed by the Ghoulies game.

  • I'm really interested. If this is the first FPS released for Natal, it will show what needs to be done or left out for future FPSs.

  • if it is near perfect precision this game will change the universe.

  • Even if they try to do something with natal. Its very hard to depend on Rare to deliver on time or sometging worth playing. I used to be a big fan of them but they just take forever to bring out a new game..I think thats why nintendo lety them go. If they wanna be back on top they should bring back Killer Instinct or other games worth palying

  • Its kind of sad that we still refer to Rare as the people behind Goldeneye. I mean that game was fantastic and will always be on my tops, but Rare needs to come back with another groundbreaking title, so we can say something new lol. In regards to the article, I think it will be very interesting to see how this will work. Controls as stated will be the biggest issue in terms of accuracy, but movement will be something challenging as well. How can you move around in the standard FPS sense while standing or crouching with out going out of the field of view of the camera? In the Burnout as demoed for NATAL you put one foot forward to go and backward to reverse. This would not be fun for an FPS in my opinion. Looks like RARE has alot of planning and innovating to do to make this game the groundbreaker we all know their capable of, just waiting for it to happen.

  • If they implement it well, then such a game could very easily revolutionize the genre. But it will depend on the accuracy of the controls. If they pull it off, I would be interested.

  • Going on what Epic was saying with a blending of traditional controller and Natal, I must ask:  If you still have to use a traditional controller in conjunction with Natal for it to fit in with the FPS genre, then why bother with Natal at all?

I don't see how you can easily alternate back and forth between conventional controls and  motion controls in a FPS game.  Maybe at set points in the campaign mode, but I don't see it working too well in multiplayer.

  • I still have faith in Rare. That's not healthy, is it?

  • hmmmm

  • Actually, FPS is one of the few genres that would work with Natal.

  • I like Rare after all both the calssic Perfect Dark and the remake were good and lets not forget Banjo-Kazooie which is *** awesome and I am a fan of viva pinata for some reason lol I think they should make 2 plastic gun looking things and for example on the rifle it has no clip or bolt on it its just the body and some way capture the motion so how every you reload is how it reloads on the game, opposed to the same reload animation. Also you would have to slide the bolt or the slide on the rifle and pistol I think that would be sweet but probably really difficult to do.

  • I think that FPS's just do not mix with motion control. However, Resident Evil 4 on the wii was amazing. A motion for reloading all of your weapons would be fun. I think that they could implement Natal on Third person shooters, a la Gears of War, than they could first person

Goldeneye remastered with full motion control?

  • This is what I have to say: I was REALLY skeptical of playing a first person game with motions controls for a very long time. I really like the Metroid games but I had never played any of the Metroid Prime games. I was actually thinking about playing the Metroid Prime games before news broke about the Metroid Prime Trilogy release for Wii. Then, when I heard about that game, and how they were going to implement the motion controls from Corruption into the previous two titles, I was very hesitent to make this purchase, despite the fact that it was a VERY good deal (monetarily speaking) and the fact that eventually, I'd have to use the motion controls if I was going to play the third title. I seriously considered buying the first two titles for Gamecube (because you can play them on Wii) because I really wasn't interested in playing a game like that with motion controls.

Anyways, I ended up buying the trilogy. It was just too good of a deal to pass up. Seriously, all three Metroid Prime games for the price of the third one alone (No joke, the day I bought it, it was sitting right next to Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on the shelf and they were the same price!). Also, the fact that they added widescreen format to the first two games was a huge plus.

So, I am currently playing the Metroid Prime Trilogy and I'm no longer skeptical. Nintendo pulled it off. The motion controls work well and it's a lot of fun.

It's an even bigger leap of faith, to think about playing an FPS with no controller at all, but... at this point, I feel like anything is possible.

  • I don't trust Rare.

  • Dude, imagine it: a shooter game without holding a gun! AWESOME!! This probably also means time crisis will make its return.... ooohhh, crappy old time crisis

  • NINJA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hopefully they will become an industry frontrunner that they used to be.

  • I don't think Rare has it anymore.  Their most talented developers left for better things long ago.

  • So far I have to say I can't really see a game working with any kind of motion play with a controller. I won't buy or preorder any game of that type until they have been tested and scored with atleast a 8.5+ in GI before I'll look at it.
