Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer's big budget adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is slated to appear in theaters in May 2010. The film stars a newly buff Jake Gyllenhaal (Donny Darko, Jarhead) and is directed by Hollywood veteran Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Four Weddings and a Funeral). Disney recently released a long, HD trailer for the film, which has been making its rounds on the Internet.
It's our first real look at the movie, and so far it appears bear the hallmarks of past Disney and Bruckheimer collaborations like the Pirates of the Caribbean series, i.e. huge action set pieces and expensive CG. While we don't know all the details of the plot, it's clear that the film stays fairly close to the original game, which is appropriate since Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner helped write the script. Interestingly, some parts of the trailer does show Gyllenhaal engaging in some of the acrobatic climbing and platforming that is the hallmark of the games. Color us impressed.
Wow, maybe this will open a gate to awesome movies based on awesome video games.
Sweet. I'm excited. Hope it's good. But some parts made it look like Assassin's Creed. Guess that makes sense cause the Prince of Persia game is from the same people as Assassin's Creed.
i almost hate to say it but that looks really good.
This has the potential to be the video game movie that sets off the movie industry, much like Spider-Man did for comic book movies. The trailer looks fantastic - let's hope they can pull it off come May 2010!
This actually looks promising to me. Cool director and awesome actor AND Jordan Mechner helped write the script. I think this could be very good indeed.
sweet cant wait
Extremely promising trailer. Captures the spirit of the games (Even the platforming gameplay!), while making the transition nicely to big budget action flick. Fingers crossed, I don't want to be lied to anymore!
Here's hoping for some great popcorn fun come this summer!
at least its not PG.
Well then - I think I've had my mind changed as well.
I was prepared to giggle, but ***, I'm really impressed, too. I think I forgot that Gyllenhaal can actually be a capable actor.
I'll echo other's sentiments here in saying that I think this movie shows a lot of real potential. Gyllenhal is a very talented actor with a lot of variety in the kinds of roles he can play, and I think he'll pull of the Prince perfectly well. I look for him to bring a humor and a rogueish charm to the Prince that wasn't always obvious in the game.
I am worried that the plot will stray far enough away from the game as to be basically unrecognizable, but that's only because I didn't see a lot in the trailer that made me think, "Here is stuff I really remember from the game." In fact, I may need to wiki the original game to see how much of the game seems to be making it into the movie.
At any rate, I am interested in and look forward to this movie.
Looks good. I was highly impressed by the trailer. Let us hope that this could be the start of a new medium. That being that video games can actually make good movies. That's not to say they're not any good movies. I just call them 'Awesomely Bad' (n. a movie that is so bad, that it is in fact, awesome!)
Gyllenhaal plays a pretty good PoP and the action looked great. Might be a good movie!
Looks pretty cool. Now let's see if it lives up to that trailer.
Where is Kevin Sorbo when you need him?
I was impressed by the trailer. It wasn't uber-mindblowing like the 300 one, but it definitely seems to have potential; the studio didn't blow all of the awesome bits in the trailer. I was particularly surprised by how Jake G. was as the prince; when I first read about it I thought the casting was a bit sketchy, but he makes the prince a likable rascal, at least judging by the charisma he exudes in the trailer.
And this is just shameless advertising, but check out my blog on my full impressions of the trailer:

Already stoked for when it comes out!
Wow, the font they chose is terrible.
And I'm not yet sold that this will be a good movie. Looks like the Mummy meets Pirates, without the interesting characters. Special FX is nolonger enough to get me to the multiplex.
Terrible. Way to totally butcher the story. It had a very good story to start and they managed to totally ruin it. Just as with other game movies it gets butchered. Also Disney WTF?
