Activision To Host Celebs For Modern Warfare 2 Prelaunch Party

New York City will see the first public playtime with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on November 9th. Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels will take on New York Yankees utility player extraordinaires Nick Swisher and Jerry Hairston in the game, and other celebrities are sure to poke their heads in for a chance to get in on the game before it releases.

Attendees will have the chance to put their names in for a chance to play with or against the athletes and other celebs. Live DJs will set the ambience, though it is as yet unconfirmed whether any schlubs will be invited to screw up guitar samples while the DJs spin.

The event is planned to run from 4pm to 10pm on November 9th in NYC's Union Square. Given Modern Warfare 2's last few controversial weeks, Activision will probably consider it a success if no Infinity Ward employees are caught shooting up on human growth hormone and popping greenies backstage.

  • No surprise that this event would be organized. Night vision goggles included in the gift bags?

  • Dear Activision,

It would be so awesome if you invited me to come.

    Thanks

  • Sounds like fun. 7 More days left!!!!

  • Screw this. Let the celebrities play? Who cares? This is Activision becoming media whores. I don not approve of this.

  • I'm really starting to worry about the game.  If it is so great why are they doing so much senseless crap to get it out there.  People will buy it without all this craziness.

  • Promotion is promotion is promotion, and Activision are fond of money.  But Forsberg makes it sound like they are a band that sold out.  Not the case, they are simply trying to get their product the attention they feel it deserves so it will sell to more people. Just because they are able to afford a larger scale of promotion than others does not mean we should throw stones.

  • Are they doing this right there in the park on Union Square cause that would be freaking awesome ?

  • I think that IW *almost* had a chance to get 100% good press this time, but they only let celebrities play?  A drawing that only a few people will make it in?  My god, it's just all going down the drain for them...  They're killing themselves here!!!

  • I question Activision's decision to put such big emphasis on the celebs.

  • so its not ok to reference f ag s in a video...but it is ok to talk about use of illegal drug abuse? i find that funny. This little party sounds like fun, too bad i am on the other side of the country =[

  • Kinda cool to let celebs taking a shot at the game.

  • Eff this, 'look now celebs are playing games, its cool now', Jog on with that,... hmph....

  • good for them, its not like the celebs get everything they want, we should definitely let them play the night before it comes out.  I like IW and Activision but this is like a big middle finger to the game world

  • Who the eff cares about celebs playing games, games are for the common folks, wouldv'e been better if the party was involving joe shmoes, such as myself, we appreciate the games more anyways an were the ones buying the games.

  • Im going to buy it no matter how many promotional stunts they pull. Thats why i think all this stuff is unnessecary. People are going to buy the game.

  • Man, if only I were rich and famous.  Well, at least I don't do coke.

  • Modern Warfare 2 will be bigger than halo

    11.10.09

  • Can't wait for this game!

  • i dont get why people are complaining that they are promoting a game. people really need to sort out what to get mad over.

  • Adam,

What is Activision and IW giving you to provide the coverage you have been giving them? One of those nifty sets of night vision goggles? a 'complimentory' copy? Maybe even throwing in a customized XBox?

That's the only reason I can see for you kissing their butt like you have been.

Either that or your just not experienced enough to cover the release.

Kindly let us know which one it is.
