Black Wii Remote Hits Retail This Week

by Meagan Marie on Oct 14, 2009 at 05:06 AM

If you’ve been eyeing down Nintendo’s recently announced Wii Remote and Nunchuck in a darker shade, this Friday will see their release at retail. The peripherals have only been available in white since the console’s 2006 debut. A black console has yet to be announced for North America – a fact worth noting if color coordination is your thing.

"The Wii Remote revolutionized not only how people play games, but also who plays them," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "The new color lets people customize their setup, and the controllers make great stocking stuffers for players of any age."

The size may be right, but the price seems a bit hefty for a stocking stuffer. The black Wii Remote comes packaged with a matching Wii MotionPlus accessory, available at a price of $49.99. If a new Nunchuck is also in order, the matching accessory will set you back another $19.99. The total for the entire set tops out at $69.98 – the equivalent of three Wii shovelware titles.

Joking aside, we think dropping nearly $70 for cosmetic reasons alone is ludicrous. However, if you already planned to augment your remote stash or have yet to try out the enhanced precision inherent to Wii MotionPlus, spending the coin can be justified.

Considering Nintendo’s affinity for releasing their portable devices in every color of the rainbow, it’s surprising that this is the first time a fresh color has migrated to the Wii.

So what’s your plan? Is the aesthetic change enough motivation to drop some dough? Or are you satisfied with your run-of-the-mill white Wii Remote?
