What's Happening

Warren Spector & Mickey Mouse

Now that the cat is out of the bag and Disney Epic Mickey has been revealed to the world, we thought it would be a great time to explore the world of Warren Spector. No, not the dark, shadowy world gamers are used to. The world that Spector has been living in his whole life. From birth, he was destined to work in the Magic Kingdom. From wearing mouse ears at just a year old to owning a second house filled with rare memorabilia, it’s safe to say that Disney is in his blood.

With the formation of Junction Point, Spector has been handed the task of reimaging the most recognized cartoon character of all time. While that’s no easy task, it starts to become clear after watching our video interview why the invaluable property is in good hands.

Having been on this cover trip, I can safely say that if anyone is positioned to succeed at re-imagining Mickey, it's Warren. His dedication to Disney is awe-inspiring. I loved looking through his collection. Especially the obscure stuff. If people are worried that Mickey doesn't have it in him to be a rascal, look back at some of the older cartoons. He wasn't always a golden boy :D

  • It's always nice when a developer can finally create a game based off of a childhood love.

And a general question. When you all ask us the give you all questions to ask developers, will they ever appear in video format such as this interview.

@dbj (oh yeah, kicking old school)

That's actually a really cool idea we may have to explore!

  • This is great, thank you so much Nick. Love the video and beautiful photos of his collection!!!

  • I'm interested but I'm holding off judgment until I see the magazine.

  • I hold Spector as one of the gods of gaming, so to see this side of him is great. Seeing his passion for the characters to go with his design talent, I have tremendous faith in this project.

  • Great video. It's nice to see a video where some guy's just schilling for his game, just talking about what he loves, and that doesn't even mean talking about the game itself.

I'm certainly intrigued and I'm extremely excited to learn more.  :)

  • Oops, I mean not just schilling for his game. You guys need a way to edit comments.

  • Wow, great stuff!  Looks like Mickey is in extremely capable and deserving hands.

  • Very cool.  Mr. Spector seemed genuinely thrilled to be doing this project.  That should help make it a "epic" game.  I love these video clips, keep em coming.

  • What is Warren Spector's job actually titled like Creative Director or something else? I'm interested in getting into the gaming industry and want a job that has to deal with the press like his or someone like Tim Schafer

    Love the photography.

  • Wow, this is some great stuff. He actually owns a second house for his Disney memorabilia?!? Ridiculous, yet cool.

I like the quick drive-by of the photo with all those developers, including Will Wright.

  • That was a nice video.  Warren Spector is an icon in game development.  He has a lot of respect from me and others.  I can only imagine good things coming from his collaboration with Disney.

  • Warren Spector has been, and will continue to be, the man. His contributions to gaming have pushed the medium forward. I cannot wait to see where he goes with this...

  • PS - New HD video / player = tasty

  • It's really cool how he can pursue a project that combines two of his passions: making videogames and Disney.  I look forward to seeing what he has come up with.
