n an end-of-the-year interview with BBC News – Peter Molyneux shared several personal thoughts about the 2008 calendar year. While he gave opinions on a range of subjects, we were most intrigued when he announced an expected price-pressure on video games in upcoming years.
In general Molyneux seemed impressed with 2008, arguing that the Nintendo Wii exceeded expectations, the Xbox 360 fared well, and the PlayStation 3 was an overwhelming disappointment. He went on to question if the industry is now making games too difficult – citing GTA IV as an example. After talking a bit more about sequels, underappreciated games and release schedules, Molyneux moved onto the subject of the New Year and what he expects it will bring.
Surprisingly, Molyneux thinks the 2009 lineup looks a bit dry – even stating that off the top of his head he couldn’t think of any games debuting this year that really excited him. Continuing on the subject of 2009, he argued that this year will see pressure put on the ever-inflating price of video games.
“Everyone says games are good value for home entertainment, despite the relatively high price. I'm not so sure. I think we're going to see a lot of price pressure put on games,” Molyneux told BBC News.
Despite the sometimes endless hours of entertainment video-games bestow on us, we can’t think of many consumers who would protest a price-cut across the board. Coming from a respected – although sometimes excitable – industry source such as Molyneux, we are curious to see how the following years will play out. If the anticipated price-cut doesn’t come to fruition, we put our vote in for a halt in price at the least.
